Traditionally, in a hospital vital signs are taken every four hours. Sotera Wireless envisioned a way for physicians and nurses to have immediate access to vital patient parameters so they could intervene earlier and respond more rapidly.
Sotera Wireless’ ViSi Mobile™ is the “first of its kind” solution—providing constant data on core vital signs such as changes in blood-pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, temperature and pulse. Sotera is a Carlsbad, California-based digital health company dedicated to detecting early signs of patient deterioration in any acute care setting.
When our experience design team approached the design for the wearable vital signs monitor, our first concern was with hospital workflows and how they could be positively affected by a compact, wearable system. The solution had to be good for the nurse, the patient and the hospital. Applying ethnographic research principles, we observed the hospital workflow, interviewed staff and assessed patient interaction.
Location: San Diego, California
Client Type: Digital Health Company
Industry: Medical Device
The result was a comfortable body-worn sensor that allowed for freedom of movement combined with highly accurate continuous monitoring of all vital signs and worked in harmony with the patient and the healthcare environment.
The ViSi Mobile comprehensive vital signs monitoring system keeps clinicians connected to their patients, whether in bed, in transport, or while ambulating because even one failure-to-rescue is one too many.

I worked with DDSTUDIO in one of my previous positions leading Global Marketing at Sotera Wireless. Part of my role was to drive the industrial product and user interface design for the world’s first body-worn ICU-grade patient monitor. DDSTUDIO handled the User Experience, Industrial Design and Mechanical Engineering resulting in a phenomenal, FDA-approved medical device.
