Wearable wireless medical solutions are changing the way we think. Eric Topol, M.D., calls them the “the control, alt, delete of medicine.”
Traditionally, in a hospital vital signs are taken every 4 hours. Sotera Wireless envisioned a way for physicians and nurses to have immediate access to vital patient parameters so they could intervene earlier and respond more rapidly. Sotera Wireless’ ViSi Mobile™ is the “first of its kind” solution—providing constant data on core vital signs such as changes in blood-pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation, temperature and pulse.
When our experience design team approached the design for the wearable vital signs monitor, our first concern was with hospital workflows and how they could be positively affected by a compact, wearable system. The solution had to be good for the nurse, the patient and the hospital. Applying ethnographic research principles, we observed the hospital workflow, interviewed staff and assessed patient interaction. The result was a comfortable body-worn sensor that allowed for freedom of movement combined with highly accurate continuous monitoring of all vital signs and worked in harmony with the patient and the healthcare environment.
